Yesterday I asked why those of you who are afraid of snakes fear them. I was shocked to see so many of the same answers! Most of you who are afraid, said that it was because of not knowing what to expect from them or the lack of being able to read their body language. Some of you said it was because you were taught to fear them. Others said it was because they couldn’t tell a venomous snake from a non venomous snake. Whatever the answer was it almost always linked with not having much knowledge about the animals themselves!
Snakes aren’t the monsters we’ve painted them to be. In fact most snakes are extremely docile, so much so that you may not even notice that you have a few living in your garden or back yard. Snakes also play a vital role in our ecosystem. Without snakes, rodents, amphibians, and all other species which once were eaten by snakes would increase dramatically, over-consuming their own prey, such as plants, which will eventually lead to a major collapse in all of those populations, eventually leading to decline in the other animals who also prey on rodents and small animals.
Over the next few weeks I will be posting little updates on the best ways to handle snakes, How to tell venomous snakes from non venomous snakes, and how to read a snakes body language! You may be surprised to find out that snakes are actually very telling of their emotions and how each snake has its own personality and quirks!
