ANKLE SPRAINS
Ankle sprains are common sports-related injuries that occurs when the ankle rolls in an awkward way (usually outwards). This can happen when playing basketball, running, or even when wearing your favourite pair of knee high boots (my own athletic injury…). .
.
When it happens, you may experience swelling, redness, heat on the ankle. Structures affected may be the ligaments*, muscles** or bones***. Range of motion (ROM), muscle strength and reduced proprioception may occur (things to assess for) depending on the severity (Grade 1, 2 or 3****). Special tests may help diagnose this including the anterior draw test and talar tilt. .

In the first 48hrs use RICE (rest, ice - 20mins every 2-3hrs, compression, elevation). Movement can occur with RICE to help improve range and drainage of swelling. ROM exercises are important to prevent stiffness occurring. This can include, calf stretching. .
.
Once pain and swelling is controlled, you can begin strengthening and proprioceptive exercises. Strengthening can include calf raises, and eversion/inversion exercises against a theraband. Proprioceptive can be standing on a wobble board. For those runners out there; when walking is no longer limited by pain, you can try 50% walking and 50% jogging (according to an article by Wolfe, Mattacola, McCluskey, 2001). .

If you are exercising and it feels painful or swells, take note of this and reduce activity for a few days - avoid jumping/running activities. .

*Ligaments commonly affected (rolling outwards): Anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) and posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL). **Muscles affected may calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus), tibiablis anterior, peroneus longus and peroneus brevis.
***The ankle joint made up of 3 articulations: the talocrural joint, inferior tibiofibular joint, and subtalar joint.

💫 Peroneal Tendinitis Rehab

🧠 The peroneals are a group of three muscles in your lower leg that travel down to the outside part of the ankle and foot. As a group these muscles work synergistically to evert the foot. In laymen’s terms they take the foot outwards.

💯 Two of the peroneals plantarflex the foot and peroneus tertius dorsiflexes the foot. So, with rehab it typically is a good idea to work both these movements along with eversion to bulletproof the ankle.

🏃‍♂️ How does the peroneals get injured Dr. Jack? Great question 😂! The tendons of these muscles will often get injured through a trauma such as rolling the ankle or through overuse from walking or running.

✔️ The most common site of pain occurs along the base of the 5th metatarsal which is the insertion point of the peroneus brevis and tertius or just below the lateral malleolus.

💪 This injury is initially treated with relative rest followed by a progressive strengthening program. A nice progression would be beginning with isolated muscle strengthening in a non weight bearing position and then advancing to functional/dynamic training.

👆 Above I demonstrate 3️⃣ different exercises to strengthening the peroneal family. With the first, make sure the foot is everted prior to moving your ankle from full range dorsiflexion and plantarflexion. On the second and third, the goal is to perform a calf raise that biases the peroneals. To do so, make sure when standing on your toes that most of your weight is being placed through the big toe.

Calling all GAA, Soccer and team sports players currently missing sport! 
If you haven’t already started the FIFA 11+ program... You probably should! Especially if you've had a knee or ankle injury in the past. 🔥Studies show a 30% reduction in likelihood of leg injuries when this is your warm up🔥

The programme takes twenty minutes to complete and is designed to be performed twice a week. No specific equipment is needed. The FIFA 11+ consists of 15 exercises divided into three separate components. 
The Components are outlined in picture 2;

RUNNING ⚽️8 minutes
Encompassing cutting, change of direction, decelerating and proper landing techniques

STRENGTH/ PLYOMETRIC/BALANCE 🏈10 minutes
Focus on Core Strength, Control and Proprioception

HIGH SPEED AND CHANGE OF DIRECTION RUNNING🎾2 minutes

There are three levels for each specific exercise (level 1-3) 
More traditional football warm-up programmes are quite variable and typically encompass running exercises, static and/or dynamic stretching, movements involving change of direction, and short passing. They typically average from five to 45 minutes in duration. Typically the average warm-up programme does not emphasise qualitative movement.

A meta analysis conducted in 2017 by Sadigursky et al., evaluated the efficacy of the FIFA 11+ injury prevention program for soccer players.
6,344 players, 3,307 (52%) using the FIFA 11+ and 3,037 (48%) using traditional warm ups. Results showed the FIFA 11+ warm-up program reduced the risk of injury in soccer players by 30%!!!! If you 're a soccer player, GAA player or multidirectional sports player- try this out for your lockdown/preseason training💪

I am thankful for books transporting me to fantasy worlds from the comfort of my couch.
I am thankful for painting as it forces me to trust the creative process - a path to follow and execute - when other aspects of life are more chaotic.
I am thankful for collaboration. 
The encouragement that I have felt from my #ATFL family is surreal!
In such a short space of time us women have formed such a strong friendship through our love of fashion, positivity and creating feel good content!
A thankful heart is a happy heart.

This patient is recovering from a Brostrom surgery of his right ankle. This surgery repairs his Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL). This surgery could be indicated for an athlete with reoccurring lateral ankle sprains. I use the banded rotational exercise to load his right lateral ankle with change of motion. I ask the patients then to “kiss the wall” for further stability gains. Please consult with your orthopedic doctor or PT if you have reoccurring ankle sprains!

This is what #recovery looks like! 7h of @zoom_video_communications meetings are an ideal opportunity to rest, ice, compress (in my favorite @aswiftcompressionsocks ) and elevate! 
Normally, I would begin to transition from ice to heat as I pass the 48-72h mark from the inciting injury. However, this is also immediately after my first #workout on the injured ankle so I wanted to err on the side of caution and minimize swelling from any additional micro-injuries sustained during cycling.

Today’s #cycling workout was purely diagnostic. I needed to answer the following questions:
1. Could I clip in?
2. Could I perform a complete pedal stroke without pain?
3. When would compensatory muscles fatigue?
Fortunately, I surprised myself with all 3! A solid 30 minute ramp showed that I can still get to supra-threshold powers as long as I limit my #cadence Because my limiting factor is the ANTERIOR TALOFIBULAR LIGAMENT (ATFL), loading the front part of the pedal stroke doesn’t cause pain but engaging the “pull” stresses the ATFL and causes pain. This is necessary for accelerations to high cadence so I’ll be limiting that for now. In the meantime, I can @gozwift again!!! 🤩
