Marilyn Monroe photographed with jewels for "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953) - Marilyn once had a lover in the 1940s (she said in My Story) but never gave the name. She wanted to get a present for him, so she went to the jewelry store. She has less than $2, but told the jeweler she would pay him back every last bit. He believed her and she picked something out that was around $500. She went back to his place and suprised him. He liked the gift, but asked her why she didn't get it engraved with a message like her name on it. Marilyn replied with: "I was going to have it engraved, but changed my mind." He asked her why and Marilyn said: "Because you'll leave me someday and you'll have some other girl to love. And thus you wouldn't be able to use my present if my name was on it. This way, you can always use it, as if it was something you bought yourself." It took Marilyn about two years to pay the jeweler back all five hundred dollars. In the book it says: 'By the time I had paid the last twenty-five dollar installment, my lover was married to another woman.' Ok sorry with all of these things from My Story. It's just an amazing book! 💖💋 #MarilynMonroe #GentlemenPreferBlondes #1953 #Marilyn #Monroe #MM #NormaJeaneMortenson #NormaJeaneBaker #NormaJeane #1920s #1930s #1940s #1950s #1960s #1970s #1980s #1990s #OldHollywood #ClassicHollywood #OldButGold #Vintage #Actor #Actress #Beauty #GainLikes #GainTrick #LikesForLikes

It's a hot, sultry night in the city. Which of course makes me think of Marilyn Monroe in the Seven Year Itch. Who can forget how she put her undies in the icebox, or how she stood over a subway grate to cool herself down in the updraft? Not me!!! However I think my favorite part was Tom Ewell's fantasy in which Marilyn gets all goosebumpily for his piano stylings of Rachmaninoff! Just here to document that I am in fact working on this! Still some pieces to go (and it’s heckin’ hot out right now). Felt spooky, and I like spooky, but might delete later. 👿🔥😇 (Plz ignore wig cap line). I picture a Fem!Crowley fairly androgynously dressed but like fem-fatale androgyny with hair between well-kept-and-purposely-tousled ‘70s rocker and totally borrowed from Veronica Lake ala 1940s. I feel a lot of Hollywood Glamor era vibe coming through like Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Stanwyck, and Katharine Hepburn x The Runaways—someone you would feel very intimidated by but also want to be. _ _ _ #femcrowley #costest #crowley #crowleycosplay #genderbendcosplay #michigancosplayer #goodomens #goodomenscosplay #costuming #goodomenscosplay #oldhollywood #goodomensprime #cosplaywip

Lauren Bacall in “Dark Passage” (1947) // although this film was not received as well as other Bogie and Bacall movies, it is unique in the aspect that for a good part of the movie, the scenes are shot in the first person pov of Humphrey Bogart’s character. I personally really like this technique because it’s something you don’t always see! (Plus more shots of Bacall) 🖤

😍 Yes, there were others before her, but Diana Ross crossed every barrier and became the first bona fide, bankable, black film actress in the history of motion pictures. It's a shame that in today so many seem to have forgotten that Miss Ross helped to open the doors for black actresses. Throughout the 70s and before she even made her 3rd film, she and Barbra Streisand were the only 2 women on the list of the top 10 film stars in the country. In 2004, when Halle Berry became the first black actress to win a Best Actress Oscar, she thanked literally every single black woman who had ever been nominated for an Academy Award - except for, arguably, the biggest star of them all, Diana Ross. The slight probably wasn't intentional and she didn't have to say anything, but it just proves how much a pioneer Diana Ross was and why she is extremely underrated as an actress. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #michaeljackson #kingofpop #mjfan #blackhollywood #mjforever #dianaross #diana #mj #mjdiana #michaeljacksondianaross #ladysingstheblues #suzannedepasse #blackhistory #michaeljacksonfan #berrygordy #traceeellisross #blackactress #70s #glamourous #vintagestyle #oldhollywoodglam #oldhollywood #trending #thesupremes #motown #blackexcellence #blackgirlmagic #dianarosshair #teamdianaross #missross⁣⁣

Ella Hall pursued a career in acting the same as her mother did. While her mother never achieved notoriety as an actress, Ella did, at least for a while. Her first credited appearance on screen was actually a starring role in he film Memories, released in 1913. The success of that film led to her doing 37 films in one year alone. A couple of these during that time were The Master Key and The Spy. From 1915-1919, Ella would appear in more than 39 films, an impressive feat for any actress. Her final silent film was also her best-known, The Flying Dutchman. Ella would also have a minor and uncredited appearance in Cecil B. DeMille’s Madam Satan, in 1930. After making her final film three years later, Ella Hall retired from acting altogether. Her children would become B-movie stars in their own right. They were Ellen Hall and Richard Emory. It’s a shame that Ella never broke out into superstardom, but at least we can remember her here. #ellahall #ellenhall #richardemory #silent #memories #themasterkey #thespy #cecilbdemille #madamsatan #theflyingdutchman #tcm #vintage #oldhollywood #hollywood #cinema #film #classiccinema #classichollywood #classicfilm #goldenage #goldenageofhollywood #goldenagecinema #goldenagefilm

This photo was taken in 1937 - an interesting period in Joan's career I liken cocooning. Only twelve years prior, she came to Hollywood - nine since her 1928 breakout role in 'Our Dancing Daughters.' The window of time is short, though seems like an eternity when set against Joan's career. She reigned the box office in the early thirties after giving stellar performances in vehicles such as Grand Hotel (32), and proved herself in the tough and judgemental Hollywood crowd, joining the ranks of the leading stars. Not even five years later she was facing stagnation in the studio -- poor scripts, redundant roles, and the ushering of newer, more exciting stars at MGM all proved to be working against her. Additionally, she was struggling in her personal life, with her marriage to Franchot unraveling by the minute. I think many of us, myself included, often overlook Joan's films from this interim period in the late thirties. It's very easy to do so when she has given us performances on the level of Mildred Pierce and Sudden Fear. We think of her more recognizable roles, the ones that earned her notoriety and clout, and tend to forget about the ones in between. Three films particularly come to mind when I think of this period -- The Bride Wore Red (unquestionably my favorite of the lot,) Mannequin, and The Ice Follies of 1939. In all three, Joan has at least one song she performs for watching audiences. In the 1930s, Joan religiously studied singing, opera specifically, and took private lessons. It isn't until 1953's Torch Song (and at the very end!) that we hear her singing voice again, save for a moment or two in Humoresque. I truly feel that these movies, these performances are something special to behold. Joan herself admittedly disliked her films during this period. She wrote of how her own personal depression made each one seem laborious and mechanical, yet she achieves catharsis marvelously - perhaps unknowingly - not only through her acting, but through the incorporation of what were then her own passions, like with the music. I hope that I can inspire some of you to revisit these often forgotten films - I know I will be.

A great true color photo from Chicago TV Week August 10, 1957 regarding the addition of George and Gracie's son Ronnie to the cast of their show. . Sometimes when cast members are added mid-way into a series, it can be a sign their trying to keep themselves from 'jumping the shark,' but in this case it seemed to help them gain some audience as Ronnie was considered one of late 1950's minor "dreamboats" boys (ala Pat Boone, Eddie Fisher, Ricky Nelson etc.) . The Burns and Allen Show hovered around 20-28 in the ratings during most of it's run and received many Emmy nominations but, sadly, won none (a certain talented red-head provided some stiff competition :) . Emmy Nominations for the Burns and Allen Show: -Best Comedy Show 1952 (winner Red Skelton Show) -Best Comedy Show 1953 (winner I Love Lucy) -Best Situation Comedy 1954 (winner I Love Lucy) -Best Series Supporting Actress Bea Benaderet 1954 (winner Vivian Vance) -Best Situation Comedy Series 1955 (winner Make Room For Daddy) -Best Actress in regular series 1955 (winner Loretta Young) -Best Series Supporting Actress Bea Benaderet 1955 (winner Audrey Meadows) -Best Actress continuing performance 1956 (winner Lucille Ball) -Best Continuing Performance by a Comedienne in a series 1957 (winner Nanette Fabray) -Best Continuing Performance by a Comedienne in a series 1958 (winner Dinah Shore) -Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Comedy Series 1959 (winner Jane Wyatt) . Amazing George was never even nominated!
