Get off the beaten path in the Venetian lagoon and discover secret vineyards, colourful islands, and pristine beaches located a short boat ride away.
The second-largest island in the lagoon, the tranquil Sant’Erasmo lies five kilometres northeast of Venice. Supplying Venetians with fruit and vegetables for centuries, we were lucky to try the island’s famous purple-hued artichokes during our Rialto market visit.
Once a rural retreat for aristocrats, it now provides a largely tourist-free refuge for Venetian families who moor their boats along its mudbanks and picnic on its narrow coasts.
For Italian wine lovers, visit Sant’Erasmo for the vineyards producing organic white wine and offering private tours as well as tailored-made excursions. For example, on our Italian adventure, we explored the neighborhooding islands of Murano and Burano.
