How do you deal with unrequited love? You take the familiar cinematic tropes of love and turn it all upside down? Revisiting #premam is like revisiting an old love. Time just rearranges your memories. And it all comes rushing back. Expertly written and directed by #AlphonsePuthran, it is all in the writing. George(Nivin Pauly) goes through his rites of passage first falling for Mary, then Malar and finally Celine.
While Malar played by the heartbreaking lovely @saipallavi.senthamarai is the film’s best portion, what also stays is the drunken banter between the friends, their attempts at smoking, drinking, watching porn. Sneakily and seamlessly the director makes wry observations on life, love and other amatory pursuits never losing focus on our hero George.
Shot amidst the gorgeous locales of kerala, I’d hate to employ the term “coming of age” term for this film. It is so tactile filled with tender observations about love and heartbreak that you want to just hug it. The friends consoling a drunk Nivin Pauly after Malar’s change of heart due to an accident, the two teachers Vinay fort, and Soubin Shahir’s futile attempts to befriend Malar are master strokes of writing. Especially the scene in the canteen where the physical instructor asks for more rice and fish to be served. Malar teaching the boys dancing is a nice touch too.
Delightful innuendo upon innuendo is whipped up. Never once making it below the belt or cheap. Sai Pallavi is a dream making you want to watch her again and again. Madonna Sebastian and the Young Anupama Parmeshwaran are delightful.
And at the heart of it all is the utterly wonderful @nivinpaulyactor. Transitioning from a 15 year old to an angsty twenty year old to a sombre 30 something, he’s fantastic. He breathes the role of George and imbues with heartbreak and a comic tease.
It’s wonderful how the director writes in everyday situations and marries it to a regular romance. Three cheers to the braveheart editing of this film which makes it a smooth watch. Some terrific music situations too add to the robustness of the film.
#premam is that little genius of a film that emerges from a solid screenplay.
