I’ve thought long and hard about what car to post before the weekend ends and I’ve gone with this one, an Aston Martin DB9. This being one of the later DB9s and a very similar one to that used in the Bond film ‘Spectre’. Aston Martin did release a special 007 edition for the movie with 150 examples but this is unfortunately not one of them. Nonetheless, this car is still a beautiful specimen and perfect tribute to the United Kingdom’s near flawless car designs. The interior is romantically colored and the curves, vents and inlets give intricacy to the streamlined fuselage. The entire car evokes a demanding and heavy presence while at the same time looks like it’s lighter than a feather, like it could whither away in a second to a million miles an hour. The swan-wing doors are also quite stunning. The former hosts of Top Gear famously joked about this car’s engine being 2 Duratec V6s (Mondeo/Taurus engines) strapped together, an engine which I am proud to say is in my own car. They’re also absolutely right, at least in a round about way, as many core parts were shared. However, Aston Martin took it many bounds and leaps farther and created one of the greatest engines to ever come out of Europe: a 6.0L V12 putting out somewhere between 450 and 510 brutal horses (depending on the year). They also joked that Aston Martins are traditionally similar to American muscle cars, primarily built for good looks and raw power but not as much for track performance. Like their first statement, this is also true, but for good reason. Astons are cars for purists, another quote from Jeremy Clarkson (this time on the Vulcan): “it’s not an example of what cars will be like in the future, it’s a celebration of what they were like in the past”. That’s what Aston Martin (at least at the time) is all about, and that’s okay with me. It’s the perfect car to end the weekend.
