This is a photo I took in big Sur. Yellow flowers set against a Pacific Ocean backdrop and I made a motivational meme out of it. (Please join my cult!)
Change comes when things break and crumble and fail and fall apart. Loss makes room and space for new things to come in. Loss has been my greatest teacher. With very few exceptions, the things I once labeled as bad or awful, I now view with gratitude and as being necessary for my personal evolution. Had I not experienced those losses and hardships, I never would have taken this photo and thousands like it. I wouldn’t have seen 47 states by now and 44 national parks. I wouldn’t be headlining my home club tonight in Wilmington, I wouldn’t be leaving on another two month tour. I got to learn what I didn’t want, what kind of work I couldn’t do, what kind of life I couldn’t lead, what kind of love didn’t feel good. Sometimes being able to pinpoint what we don’t want gets us closer to understanding what we do want. When something seems bad, we can slow down, be still, accept the present moment and say “I’m about to learn, I’m about to grow, I’m about to evolve, I’m about to kick some ass”
It’s Friday the 13th and a full moon. Come down to Dead Crow tonight and let’s get weird!
