President Trump’s JEDI Powers ⚡️
In a land far, far away, a $10 billion cloud services contract “gift-wrapped for #Amazon” and going by the acronym ‘#JEDI,’ was awarded to #Microsoft by the war council (the Department of Defense). However, #Bezos suspects an interference from the dark side!
Investors love Amazon Web Services (#AWS). By selling online products and services on demand in supermarket-like fashion, the platform does away with the need for companies to maintain physical hardware. From databases to virtual machine hosting, supplying the backend of the Internet is what Amazon is all about these days. AWS is best-in-class ahead of alternatives from #Google, #Oracle, #IBM, and Microsoft Azure, and it’s one of Amazon’s most substantial revenue segments.
Last September, the Pentagon decided a ten-billion-dollar upgrade to its infrastructure was in order. As a potential in-road to more government work, the IoT-focused, AI-driven, big data-powered Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) contract got Amazon investors pretty excited! However, despite the tech giant waltzing through the early application process, the White House had different ideas.
With Amazon a shoo-in, President Trump ordered the contract to be placed on hold. After calling Bezos’s Washington Post a “lobbyist weapon” and saying that Amazon “got away with murder on tax,” he coincidentally asked Defense Secretary Esper to investigate (his) complaints of favoritism toward the company. Well, who’d have thunk it? The contract went to Microsoft!
Now, in suspiciously rapid turnaround time, AWS has surfaced a heavily redacted, 103-page dossier that itemizes every way President Trump “gave it a black eye.” $10 billion remains hanging in the balance, and a court will get the final, impossible say. Is Amazon right to feel aggrieved, or is the world’s most valuable company just a sore loser? Fear is the path to the dark side, so Bezos better watch out!
