So much of our environment can dictate how we feel around food. In this case, healthy individuals that had high stress levels ended up gaining weight over the course of both 6 months and 2 years due to overeating. This tells us that it’s not all just ‘in our heads’ and that sometimes our circumstances make it more difficult to reach a goal or even maintain our weight. If you find yourself being overly stressed in your day to day life, perhaps try to conquer that first before starting a weight loss or maintenance goal. What we want to do is make this goal as easy as possible to reach, and if something in our environment is not conducive to that goal, we should tackle that first. Omega-3 fatty acids 🐟🥑🌰 Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids provides an anxiolytic effects to those who suffer from anxiety. Omega-3 fatty acids are located in brain membranes and may play a role in controlling neuroplasticity, inflammation, & other neurobiological processes. Find omega-3's in fatty fish, flax/chia/hemp seeds, nuts, avocado, enriched eggs, spinach, and brussels! ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 2. Antioxidants 🥦🥬🍅 Think vitamin C & E! The antioxidant vitamins are linked to anxiety relief based on their role in defending against oxidative stress. One study found that patients with GAD had a significant reduction in anxiety scores with a significant increased in serum antioxidant levels after 6 weeks of vitamin C and E supplementation when compared to a control group. Vitamin C is found in bell pepper, broccoli, kale, tomato, & strawberries. Vitamin E is found in dark leafy greens, avocado, nuts, seeds, & whole grains.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 3. B vitamins 🥚🥩🍞 B vitamins, such as B12, B6, and folate, have historically been linked to depression & mood disorders. Zinc 🥩🥜🧀 Zinc is needed for neurotransmitter synthesis, specifically, for serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. 🌊MEAL PREP MONDAY🌊 . I am nowhere near an experienced cook. I make a huge mess and my food does not normally come out the way I intend. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ . But I meal prep pretty often. It saves me time and effort throughout the week when I might be strapped for time. 👍👍 . This week, I made turkey meatballs! 😋😋 . Why turkey you say? . 1️⃣It is low in fat 2️⃣It has similar texture as beef 3️⃣It’s an affordable option . Making these meatballs is pretty simple: . 1️⃣Finley chop any vegetables you like 2️⃣Mix the meat with those vegetables, an egg, flour or breadcrumbs, and seasonings 3️⃣Bake at 400 for 30 minutes or until done 4️⃣Enjoy! . Simple Salmon Dinner💫 Nothing like an easy and quick dinner that you can make during the week that takes under 20 min- just make sure to make enough for lunch leftovers the next day😉 _ Directions: first: preheat oven to 350. When it’s preheating - steam asparagus in microwave. Top with olive oil and @mccormickspice grill masters garden vegetable seasoning. Next microwave @traderjoes frozen brown rice packets. My lil trick is to add a spoon or two of coconut oil and sea salt for some flavvaaa. Next season the salmon with whatever your feeling~ I used my fav California spice blend I got from a lil local shop in Connecticut. Next bake for 6-8 min. Then broil for 1-2 minutes (depending on how cooked/ crispy you like your salmon - hence that cut in it to check🤪). WHOOO ENJOY🌟 #sofitsohealthyy

It's sad to me when I see people stigmatizing processed meats or calling ingredients "chemicals" (everything is a damn chemical).⁣ ⁣ Let's first 𝐃𝐄𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐄 what a processed meat is: ⁣ Anything that has been taken from its original form and changed. So chicken breasts - processed meats, ground turkey - processed meats, bacon - processed meats. Food producers can process meat in a food manufacturing plant or consumers can take buy meat and take it home and prepare it. Consumers at home add salt, seasonings, cut, blend or chop it - processors do the same thing but under the watchful eye of the USDA ensuring maximum protection against food safety.⁣ ⁣ Sometimes a food manufacturer might use ingredients that are unfamiliar to you and make you question the product - but remember that everything we consume -whether it's water, salt, or sodium phosphate - all all chemicals. Everything used in food must be declared on the label and go through rigorous government testing before being approved for human consumption. Plus several ingredients used in processed meats keep us safe from deadly food borne pathogens.⁣ ⁣ Some people might argue that studies have shown a link between processed meats and cancer but that isn't the truth. One of the largest studies ever done (1) in which data from 14 other major studies found that there was no association between red and processed meat and cancer. Further a review on processed meat and colon cancer found that there was insufficient evidence (2) to support a link between the two.⁣ ⁣ So include some processed meats in your diet because 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐀𝐑𝐄 a great source of protein!⁣ ⁣ Have any meat questions? It’s getting caught up in the culture that values body weight, shape, size and “wellness” or dogmatic approaches to heath over true wellbeing. . @chr1styharrison says it best in her definition: . How to improve muscle recovery:👇🏼 . After we've had an intense workout we can find ourselves sore and in need of muscle recovery. This happens because resistance training can cause our muscles develop microscopic or tiny tears which causes a release and build up something called lactic acid. This build up is what causes us to feel sore. . Here are a few things that could help you recover from an intense workout. . 1️⃣Supplements: Studies show that BCAA's help prevent your body from going into a highly catabolic rate (muscle breakdown). Preventing this can helps us decease muscle damage and reduce the severity of our soreness. Aside from BCAA's, Omega-3 intake has also shown to help reduce inflammation and in turn help with muscle recovery and soreness. . 2️⃣Protein intake: Consuming sufficient protein post workout can also aid in muscle recovery. That is because protein forms the building blocks of our muscles and helps rebuild any damaged tissue. Without sufficient protein it can take longer for our muscles to recover. . 3️⃣Foam rolling aka "self-myofacial release": can help recovery and soreness reduction in muscle groups worked when done post workout. Most studies show that foam rolling helps breakdown lactic acid build up, increases circulation, and improves mobility. . 4️⃣Lastly, stay active by doing low intensity activity: this will help increase the circulation and blood flow to your muscles. Examples of this could be light bicycle cycling after an intense leg day, light body weight push ups after an upper body day, or a light yoga session. . A simple salad of roasted butternut pumpkin and quinoa salad with a dollop of Greek yoghurt. Cut pumpkin into quarters drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper roast in oven until cooked. In a deep pan heat a drizzle of olive oil and fry off 2 cloves garlic crushed, 1 red onion diced, 1 tsp ground turmeric and half a tsp onion powder, then add in 1 cup of quinoa rinse under cold water first add to the pan and fry off for a minute then add in 2 cups of veggie stock. Cook quinoa until all the liquid has evaporated if the quinoa is still not cooked add a little water as needed and cook until quinoa is still just tender. Serve over pumpkin add a dollop of Greek yoghurt can also add feta or goats cheese instead of yoghurt. Easy is the theme this week, I just do not want to cook and that's okay. Yesterday I roasted veggies: zukes, red onion, mushrooms, and bells. I added some of those and half a leftover can of chickpeas to a pot to heat them up. Then, I added peeled shrimp seasoned with s&p, and half a bottle of @traderjoes thai red curry sauce until shrimp was cooked. Served over jasmine rice. Also heated a jar or marinara and this bag of meat-free Italian meatballs, both from Aldi. Lastly, I made a mushroom creamy pasta. Diets are still popular but I personally can't wait until they're played out like this payphone from the 90's Experience museum in Oakland! ⁣ ⁣ How many of us can imagine calling up a friend and telling them about this amazing new diet we're on where we have to eliminate pretty much anything enjoyable? ⁣ ⁣ The truth is, most of don't need to diet. It’s often the following we could use more of instead: ⁣ ❤️Self-love⁣ 🙏🏼Respect for the current state of our body, no matter what that current state entails.⁣ 🤔An understanding of our fundamental tendencies (similar to an Enneagram score), i.e. if we aren't naturally good at following most rules and directions, what makes us think following a specific, restrictive diet plan will work? ⁣ 👀Looking at our current skill-sets and seeing if they're going to be enough to accomplish our nutritional goals, i.e: If I told you to stop going out for lunch every day at work and start cooking/preparing your own lunch at home to bring in, but you literally HATE cooking, you'll probably stop listening to me at some point, right? ⁣ ✍🏼Focusing on small, actionable changes that can be put on a calendar. What does this mean? If your goal is to lose weight and I instruct you to "eat more for breakfast" because you're currently under-eating that's simply a principle. It's not an action. An action would be, "Tomorrow at 7am I want you to eat a bowl of oatmeal, one egg, and 6oz of orange juice instead of your normal cup of coffee"—that's something we can put on a calendar, that is actionable. ⁣ 🧠Acknowledging that our brain and unique neurology plays a HUGE role in what we can and can't handle right now, and why we eat/binge/crave the way we do. It's not due to a lack of willpower or because we suck at all things food. This really couldn't be further from the truth! While intuitive eating DOES allow all foods and is NOT rigid with what you can and cannot eat...it also incorporates gentle nutrition and an awereness of how foods affect you. ⁠ What does this mean? When you eat intuitively, your choices are influenced by YOUR body and YOUR mind. You are able to notice that donuts for breakfast, lunch, and dinner lead to a stomach ache....and that zero donuts ever leads to a sad mental state. Learning to trust your body cues teaches you a lot about nutrition. We all know that fruits and veggies are good for us...and when we have a wide variety of foods we allow ourselves the time and space to crave those things that nourish us in a more traditional sense.⁠ The beginning of intuitive eating might be messy! There might be more of your "guilty pleasures" than usual! Then, I got educated on portion control. . Y’all, I eat SEVEN MEALS PER DAY!!! And because none of it is processed, it turns out to be A LOT of food. So, in other words, I am NEVER hungry. I am NEVER left wanting more. I am NEVER deprived. . Why does portion control matter? >> You learn EXACTLY how much of what foods your body needs to be fueled properly in order to function at its best. >> Did you know your body can only digest so much of one nutrient at a time?! Portion control ensures your body is getting the most out of the nutrients you put into it. >> Portion Control ensures you aren’t overstuffing or over-stretching your stomach, thereby reducing cravings and hunger. . PLUS knowing exactly how much my body needs helps me save $$$ — I only purchase exactly the correct amounts of food each week at the store and nothing gets wasted! . . There was MUSHROOM in my belly for this spicy chickpea mushroom Curry 😜✨ 🍄 . -- (YES I used a pun that has been done a thousand times, and NO I am not embarrassed by that because PUNS ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF MY LIFE 🙌🏻) . I am not vegan or 'plantbased'. In fact, I don't personally align with any food labels anymore. But my gosh, I love vegetables, I love cooking, I love this planet, and I love having incredible access to fresh produce and local farmers who smash their jobs. . When I was a child, I wasn't into veg (I would always try and get my brother to finish off my plate). So I can't imagine going back in time to convince my child-self that veg are a worthy endeavor 😅 . But I am thankful for the 'now'. Where I have agency over myself, have an income that provides well enough, have a variety of shops so close by, have taste buds that freaking love these flavours, have a heart that yearns to be better at being kind to itself and others, have the time to think about and plan recipes... And so much more. . All we have is the 'now' to do better for our future. And the future of our planet. And that's what I am trying to do. The way I do it will look starkly different to the way you do it. And that's okay. We can move together, closer to our 'better' together. And we can keep learning ❤️

the transformation challenging has officially begun! i’ll be posting helpful tips along the way. the tips below are for my peeps whose cravings’ hit hard at night. so, here’s how to avoid late night snacking:⁣ ⁣ - don’t even have the junk available! clean out your pantry/fridge & get rid of it all (yes that means your ice cream has got to go)⁣ - craving something sweet after dinner? have a piece of your favorite fruit⁣ - have some (calorie-free) flavored carbonated water. works wonders at curbing hunger/cravings 🙌🏼⁣ - restrict your time eating window & give yourself a hard cutoff post dinner - say 7 or 8PM you stop consuming anything but water⁣ ⁣ sometimes using one of these does the trick for me, other times i need to enlist the help of ALL of them. try them out, play with them, interchange them, and see what works for you!

I don’t know who needs to hear this but it’s really okay to eat white bread. It’s okay to eat packaged sliced bread. It’s okay to eat whole wheat bread. Multigrain bread. Cinnamon raisin bread. It’s okay to eat ALL🍞 THE 🍞BREADS. I remember there was a time when I thought I *should* only eat 100% whole wheat bread. Because as a dietitian I learned that whole grain was better for you. Now let’s be clear. Whole grain products have more fiber and fiber does some cool stuff for your health like keeps you regular, lowers blood pressure, keeps you fuller for longer. *And* too much fiber can be problematic for some people and cause digestive woes. Nutrition doesn’t have to be black or white. It doesn’t have to be only whole grains and no white carbs. It can be a mix of both! There are times I want whole grains because I want something more filling or nuttier in flavor. And there are times I want white bread, pasta or rice because they also taste great. Like this avocado toast on country white bread. It wouldn’t have been as tasty on whole-wheat bread. But the day before I got almond butter, butter, jam, and sea salt on whole-wheat sesame and it was the bomb. One not better than the other. Both wonderful with different toppings.
