A humble attempt by a middle class woman to re-use her wedding clothes and "designer blouses" on which ridiculous amount of money was spent!
I got a chance to wear a Mundum Neryathum with a dark green colour blouse today as a part of a dear friends wedding function, and I was taken back to my school days, when I wore a Saree for the very first time in my life. I was in class 12 and all the girls had decided to wear Kerala saree for onam. I had always been an obese kid, and I was reluctant to wear a saree as I was overly conscious about my body. But I did not want to be an odd one and hence decided to do it any way. My mom suggested that I wore either a dark green or a bright red colour blouse with my first ever Saree (because she considers those two colours very auspicious) and I chose dark green. Neither my mom nor I were experts in saree draping, and on the big day, I went to school with a messily draped saree. I remember my friends and my teachers trying to redo my terribly draped saree! I hardly remember getting any compliment that day. Needless to say, I hated that entire "first ever saree'' experience. I came back home, crying to my mom that I feel I am fat and ugly and I am never ever wearing a saree again in my entire life. Well, that insecure teenager has definitely come a long way in terms of her love for sarees, perception of body image and the ability to carry even the most messily draped saree without a care in the world!!!!
