The Hollywood sign, originally an advertisement for a local real estate developer, was unveiled 96 years ago today. Eventually, it fell into disrepair and was fixed by The Los Angeles Parks Department, but leaving off the “LAND” to reflect the district, not the housing development. On display in our museum is an original piece of the "Hollywoodland" "H" from before its reconstruction in 1978 . . . #HollywoodMuseum #HollywoodHistory #HollywoodSign #PegEntwistle #HollywoodLandmark #Hollywoodland

Myrna Loy as Ursula Georgi in Thirteen Women (1932). Way ahead of its time, the film is considered one of the original slasher and ‘female ensemble’ movies. The film features the only movie appearance of actress Peg Entwistle, who jumped to her death from the H in the Hollywood sign not long after completion of the movie. #myrnaloy #oldhollywood #hollywood #hollywoodsign #1930s #pegentwistle #thirteenwomen #movie #costume #costumedesign #hollywoodhistory #slasher #horror

Late to the party, as ever, I discovered @karinalongworth's fabulous podcast @youmustrememberthis last night. I adore the stories of Old Hollywood, so it was an absolute treat. . I listened to an episode from the #DeadBlondes series, about a woman who's intrigued me for a while - not least because she's also Welsh. Peg Entwistle was born Millicent Entwistle in 1908 in Port Talbot. Missing her Mother from her life (her father, Robert, seems to have won sole custody of Peg when she was very young), Peg and her father emigrated to America when she was a child. Tragically, Robert was killed in 1922 in a hit-and-run accident in New York when Peg was just 14, leaving her in the care of her uncle, a Broadway talent manager. . By 1925, Peg was in Boston, performing in repertory theatre. At the age of 17 she won rave reviews in Ibsen's The Wild Duck, a performance which inspired Bette Davis. In 1927 Peg married Robert Keith. When she was visiting her new in-laws soon after the marriage, she asked about a photo of a boy at the family home. It was revealed he was Robert's son. Robert had not told Peg about his previous marriage or child, neither did she know about his drinking problem or the fact that he was considerably in debt. The couple divorced after 2 years. . Peg made one Hollywood movie - psychological thriller Thirteen Women in 1932. It was panned by critics, but Peg was never to read the disappointing reviews. While out walking on 18th September 1932, a woman discovered a shoe, purse and jacket just under the Hollywood sign. Looking down, the walker saw a woman's body below. Inside the purse was a suicide note: "I am afraid, I am a coward. I am sorry for everything. If I had done this a long time ago, it would have saved a lot of pain. P.E." Peg had climbed a workman's ladder to the top of the 'H' and jumped off. She was 24. . Peg's legend lives on, not least as one of the tragic blondes chewed up and spat out by the system. A more positive footnote to Peg's story is that in 2014, around 100 people marked the anniversary of her death with a screening of Thirteen Women, with proceeds going to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in Peg's name.

Day 135 of an Undetermined Number "Peg" So many shattered dreams. He came to Hollywood with visions of becoming a star. Perhaps he would be the next Rodolfo Alfonso Raffaello Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina d'Antonguella. It never happened. He waited tables for three years at Musso & Frank's, and never got that big break. When I found him on that post, I just couldn't watch. 9’05’19 | 5:52 PM !!TRIGGER WARNING!! (If you are sensitive to subjects like suicide and spirits then don’t read the post or the caption, if not I would advice you to read this, at least some of this because it looks long and boring but it’s pretty noteworthy and will help you understand the writing above) •The police found the body of a 23-year-old blonde woman under the H of the Hollywood Land sign in 1932 (which is now only Hollywood). Officers determined that she must have climbed a ladder that was behind the letter “H,” which was 50 feet tall, and jumped. The recovered note said, “I am afraid I’m a coward. I am sorry for everything. If I had done this a long time ago it would have saved a lot of pain. P.E.” She was a small-town girl, a failed actress, both on the New York stage and then in Los Angeles, where she fought to get into the movie business. Her one movie bombed, with Peg singled out for bad reviews, and she was cut from the RKO studio’s list of actresses under contract. She was broke and was forced to do things she didn’t wanted to only to have some money. Unable to take it anymore, Peg threw herself off the sign that symbolizes the city of dreams, the dreams that rejected her. Sometimes, sad lives that end in tragic deaths later manifest as ghoststhat haunt the locations where they once enjoyed life... or where they died. In the case of Peg Entwistle, her spirit apparently still roams the hill around the sign that symbolized her dream. There are a lot of documented sightings of Peg Entwistle. * The Hollywood sign stands atop Mount Lee in Griffith Park, just west of the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale. Over the years, park rangers and have reported seeing a pretty blonde woman dressed in 1930s clothing wandering the park's paths. She is described as looking sad, and when she is approached, she vanishes. * It’s also said that you’ll smell gardenia perfume when she’s present - - - - •Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping pain• - - •Suicide is not: >Cowardly >Selfish >The easy way out, These are judgements. Stop judging, start getting informed and reach out to those who need and deserve help.

#onceuponatimeinhollywood #hollywood #history #cinema #1923 #20s #movies #peliculas#iconic #hollywoodland #majestuoso #enorme#pegentwistle #leyend #ghosts

Posted @withrepost@notoriousnarratives Like everything in L.A. the Hollywood sign has a story to tell. The sign was originally erected in 1923 to advertise the name of a new segregated housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. Each letter was 30 feet wide and 50 feet high, and the whole sign was studded with around 4,000 light bulbs. The sign flashed in segments: "HOLLY," "WOOD," and "LAND" lit up individually, and then the whole. Below the Hollywoodland sign was a searchlight to attract more attention. Sounds like it must have been quite the display!! But as this was the rise of cinema the sign itself became iconic and was left there. Iconic for the place, the feeling and the dream it represented. And not everyone’s dreams came true. And in September 1932, 24-year-old actress Peg Entwistle committed suicide by climbing a workman's ladder up to the top of the 'H' and jumping to her death. But just like everything else in Hollywood, the lights didn’t burn bright for too long and the sign fell into disrepair! Someone even crashed a car through the H. Eventually the sign was nearly unrecognizable. Finally, a group of 9 Hollywood elite donated the money to fix the sign, each donating $27,777, each buying one letter. Of course Hugh Hefner bought the H and Alice Cooper donated in memory to Grouch Marx!! #historypodcast #california #hollywood #hollywoodsign #californiahistory #americanhistory #hollywoodhistory #ladypodsquad #hughhefner #alicecooper #grouchomarx #pegentwistle #historynerd #historygeek #historybuff #funfacts #funfactfriday #podcastlife #podcastsofinstagram #weirdhistory #weirdhistorian #californiafacts #la #losangeles #historyoflosangeles #losangeleshistory #trhistorical

#storytime a beautiful woman and actress named Peg Entwistle moved from her career on Broadway to Hollywoodland in search of fame in film. although she landed a bigger role in Thirteen Women, her character was actually nearly cut out of the film in the final edit. after this devastating news and struggling for some time, Peg disappeared from her home on the eve of September 18th, 1932, and ventured up into the Hollywood hills in her sorrow and drunkenness. she managed to climb the ladder of the original “H” sign (remodeled H pictured here) and jumped to her death. her suicide note was found first, within her purse at the base of the ladder the following day by a hiker. the note said she was a coward and a failure, sorry for everything. her body was found two days after by authorities. sadly, her uncle received mail addressed to her shortly after her death, offering her another role in an upcoming production - an offer to play a character who commits suicide. Thirteen Women was also released after her suicide. today, there have been dozens of sightings of a woman in 1930’s attire, and the smell of gardenia flowers accompanying - her favorite perfume scent to wear. these particular flowers are not suited to grow in the Los Angeles metro area. the apparition of Peg Entwistle is most likely to be spotted on foggy nights and has vanished before onlooking eyes. #lanadelrey ’s “Lust for Life” is directly inspired by Entwistle’s tragedy • • • • • • • #losangeles #ghoststories #pegentwistle #hollywood #hollywoodsign #hollywoodhike #urbanlegends #urbex #paranormal #naturephotography #gonegirl #mystery #losangeleshistory #lahistory #latenightthoughts #kodak #travelgram #didyouknow #facts #la

#pegentwistle #hollywoodland #classichollywood #oldhollywood #thirteenwomen #thirteenwomenmovie #aprendizdecinefila

"A Song of an unknown Actress" combines the stories from different biographies into a collective experience of the dream factory Hollywood as a place of longing, where everything seems possible for everyone and where a single moment can decide about success and failure. Born on this Day in 1908 Died: September 16, 1932 Millicent Lilian "Peg" Entwistle was a British stage and screen actress. She appeared in only one film, Thirteen Women, which was released after her death. Sadly, Peg gained notarity for committing suicide by jumping off the letter H of the Hollywood (Hollywood Land) sign. The urban legend of "The Lady in White" (a ghostly figure with skeletal face and hollow eyes dressed in a white dress that wanders the hill where the sign is located.) is said to be the ghost of Peg. *Photo taken by Hollywood Exhumed during LAPD helicopter ride along 2017. #hollywood #oldhollywood #historicalplaces #losangeles #californiahistory #spookyplaces #haunted #historykeeper #hollywoodhills #hollywoodsign #pegentwistle #urbanlegend #ladyinwhite #hollywoodhistory #1930shollywood #ghostsofholly #ghosts #ghosthunter #paranormal

Happy Heavenly Birthday to actress Peg Entwistle (1908-1932) AKA “The Hollywood Sign Girl” 💖💖💖. The daughter of actor Robert Entwistle (1872-1922), she and her father came to the United States from her native England when she was a young child. After Robert Entwistle’s untimely death, she was raised by an uncle who happened to be a theatrical talent manager. While still a teen she developed a passion for acting and moved to Boston to study her craft. Making her first Broadway appearance in 1925, Entwistle worked steadily on stage for the rest of the 1920s into the early 1930s. In 1932 she headed to Hollywood where she first appeared in a play alongside Billie Burke (1884-1970), and then made her one and only film, “Thirteen Women” (1932), alongside Myrna Loy (1905-1993), Irene Dunne (1898-1990), and Ricardo Cortez (1900-1977). Although her role was minor, she had hoped that it might help further her acting career. But, once production concluded, Entwistle was unemployed with no theatrical or film projects on the horizon. Depressed about her career and perhaps other issues that remain unknown, she left her uncle’s home the evening of September 16, 1932 (ironically the same evening “Thirteen Women” was released to poor reviews, though she would have been unaware of the critical reception before her death) telling him that she was headed to the drugstore. She never returned. She instead climbed up a steep slope to the top of the famous “Hollywood” sign (which then still read “Hollywoodland”), stood just above the “H”, and jumped off to her death. She left her purse with a suicide note inside along with her coat and a shoe, which were found and given to police who then located her body. She was just 24 years old 😞🙏🏼💖. Entwistle was married and divorced from actor Robert Keith (1898-1966), making her the stepmother for a brief time of future actor Brian Keith (1921-1997), who would sadly also commit suicide later in life 😞🙏🏼💖. Bette Davis (1908-1989) once saw Entwistle on stage and cited that performance as part of the inspiration behind her own acting ambitions. It is so sad to imagine what might have been if Entwistle had not passed away so young...

Remembering Peg Entwistle on her birthday (1908-1932) Having made only one feature film, ‘Thirteen Women’ (1932), Peg was unfortunately more remembered for her suicide fate than her acting career. Sunday evening, September 18th 1932, after a night of drinking and extremely deep depression, she climbed the 50 foot ‘H’ of the Hollywoodland sign and dove head first on to the ground killing herself immediately, 2 days after the release of her only film. #hollywoodcentury #pegentwistle #thirteenwomen #hollywoodsign #hollywoodlandsign #hollywood #suicide #death #birthday #actress

Traveling through classic film: The Hollywood Sign: last week I hiked to the Mount Hollywood summit. On September 18, 1932, another girl was hiking there as well when she came across a woman’s shoes, jacket, and purse. Sticking out of the purse was a suicide note. She called the police. The police discovered Peg Entwistle (first name actually Millicent), a girl from Wales who had first tried to make it on the New York stage (and booked a small part in an Ethel Barrymore play and a breakout role in “The Man from Toronto” where legend has it that Bette Davis saw her and decided to be an actress) and then, like so many stage actresses of the period, went to Hollywood to become a studio player. She was signed by RKO but her movie career never took off. She climbed to the top of the “H” and jumped. She was 24. Prior to her death, she was stepmother to Brian Keith, the actor who played the dad in the original version of “The Parent Trap” #pegentwistle #pegentwhistle #hollywoodsign #mounthollywood #bettedavis #ethelbarrymore #rko #briankeith #theparenttrap #onthestreetwheretheylived

“We climb up the H of the Hollywood sign....” . Peg Entwistle briefly became a symbol of lost souls in old Hollywood when she committed suicide by climbing the H of the Hollywood sign where she flung herself off. Harvey and Daeida Wilcox founded Hollywood in 1887 as a community for likeminded followers of the temperance movement. By 1923, it was conceived as an outdoor ad campaign for a suburban housing development called “Hollywoodland”. Rumors of being haunted.... In spring 1932, actress Peg Entwistle moved from NYC🗽 to LA to try her luck with 🎬. Soon after she received a part in a murder-mystery film, the studio reportedly did not renew the option on her contract upon its completion. That September, Peg allegedly climbed a ladder to the “H” on the Hollywoodland sign and jumped off. Now years later.. even though the Sign’s appearance and purpose have evolved over the years, its basic aspirational message remains the same: “This is a place where magic is possible, where dreams can come true.” It is now used as a hiking trail⛰ and has been showcased in many films. peg entwistle was a broadway and theater actress, and was bette davis’ idol. she’s the reason bette davis started acting. she appeared in only one movie (thirteen women with irene dunne and myrna loy). after deciding she was a failure when more offers didn’t roll in and things weren’t going the way she’d wanted, she killed herself by jumping from the “h” in the hollywood sign in 1932 (she likely didn’t die on impact, and had to lay at the bottom with broken bones and severe bleeding until she passed). a few days later, a letter came to her home from RKO, offering her a role. it was sent before she died. 💔💔💔 #pegentwistle #hollywoodsign #oldhollywood #classichollywood #goldenage #silverscreen #1930s #bettedavis #hollywood #vintage

Ventiquattro anni. #lefilastrocchedelladdio #bakemonolab #deluxe #illustrati #pegentwistle #hollywoodland #hollywood #cinemamonamour #moviestar

Today’s #SharonLocationDay is the Young Women’s Club Association, built with the support of Mrs. C. B. DeMille and Mary Pickford. It served as a sorority for young women who were preparing their selves for the Hollywood world. Located at 1215 Lodi Place, Hollywood. Sharon Tate was sent there between 1963 and 1964 by Filmways after signing a seven-year contract with agent Martin Ransohoff. She stayed at a room with a girl who made a pass at her, so Sharon asked to be moved to another room. After living for awhile there she moved in with friend Sheila Wells not so far away from the Y.W.C.A. This historical building was designed by Julia Morgan who also happened to design the Hearst Castle. It was originally located in a private home but it was too small for all the actresses who needed to stay in, so a new studio club was built here. Several actresses stayed here apart from Sharon, including Peg Enswistle, Kim Novak, Dorothy Malone, Donna Reed, Rita Moreno, Nancy Kwan, Anne Davis and Marilyn Monroe, who stayed in room 334. It served as a studio club from 1916 to 1975. This building can’t be demolished since it’s part of the National Register of Historic Places, added in 1979. Another self-portrait for VOXPOP: me as Dory Previn. What can I say about her? Ultimate hero? Best songwriter? Dory was scared of planes, hated Mia Farrow but was obsessed with Hollywood and was left handed. She was a total artist and if ever you don’t know her work, please check her song « Lady with the braid » for a start. But every album, every song is simply... outstanding. Impossible for me to listen to her 12 min track « Taps, Tremors and Timesteps » without crying the whole way through. « The Broken promises », self-portrait as Dory Previn, Paris 2007. . . . . . #doryprevin #35mm #selfportrait #marycbrownandthehollywoodsign #hollywoof #1970s #singersongwriter #femaleartist #femalecomposer #femalesinger #dory #doppelganger #losangeles #miafarrow #brando #pegentwistle #lovesongtothemonster
