💥Juvenile Osteochondritis Dissecans can occur in individuals aged ~10-15 with open physes (growth plates). Adult Osteochondritis Dissecans refers to the condition in skeletally mature individuals.

💥A single, clear cause for this condition has not been identified. However, proposed etiologies include:

⚫️Repetitive microtrauma
⚫️Vascular failure of the connective tissue surrounding cartilage
⚫️Local ischemia (decreased blood supply) after a single injury
⚫️Genetic predisposition.

💥As the disease progresses, pathology may present clinically with symptoms related to the integrity of the articular cartilage.
.
💥Early signs, associated with intact cartilage, may be related to a softening phenomenon and alteration in the mechanical properties of cartilage. .
💥Later stages can present with signs of articular cartilage separation, cartilage flaps, loose bodies, inflammatory synovitis, persistent or intermittent joint effusion, and, in severe cases, secondary joint degeneration. .
💥Selecting a treatment requires a balancing application of nonsurgical interventions with assessment of the degree of articular cartilage stability and the potential for spontaneous recovery. .
💥Conservative therapies include: Restricted weight bearing and bracing, which is important for:

As we head into this hot weekend, here are 6 things that you and your family can do to stay hydrated and healthy:

1. Drink a tall glass glass of water first thing in the morning and before you go to sleep.
2. Keep a bottle of water with you during the day so that drinking water is easy and always accessible.
3. If you don’t like the taste of plain water, here are some things that you can add to it to make it a little more “fun”: a slice of lemon or lime, fresh mint leaves, cucumber slices, orange slices.
4. Eat fruits like oranges, watermelon, celery, and grapes.
5. Do your best to limit your consumption of caffeine and sugary drinks.
6. Make healthy homemade popsicles that are a fun and easy snack (link in bio).

ECCENTRIC STEP DOWNS
•
This is a great exercise to eccentrically load the quadriceps muscle, which helps stabilize the knee. Eccentric means that the muscle has to lengthen in a controlled manner under load. In this case, your body weight is the load. Eccentric loading is the most demanding to the muscle so you will definitely  feel a nice burn if done correctly 🔥
•
Plus, this exercise is super functional! Whenever you step down from a step or curb or walk down a steep hill you are using your eccentric quad strength.
•
How to perform:
✨Stand at the edge of a sturdy box or step so that one leg is essentially hanging off the edge.
✨The leg bearing all the weight is the working leg. Slowly bend this knee until your other foot taps the ground. The working knee should stay straight over the toes and not fall in.
✨Push through the working leg on the box to come back up to standing.
✨For more of a challenge, you can reach forward with the non-working leg vs. keeping it at your side. ✨Do 3 sets of 10 repetitions or until you fatigue.
•
To make it harder: increase the height of the step or add weights. To make it easier: decrease the height of the step.
•
Don’t underestimate this simple exercise! Try it out & tag me if you do 💪🏼

Whenever you step down from a step or curb or walk down a steep hill you are using your eccentric quad strength. • How to perform: ✨Stand at the edge of a sturdy box or step so that one leg is essentially hanging off the edge. ✨The leg bearing all the weight is the working leg. Slowly bend this knee until your other foot taps the ground. The working knee should stay straight over the toes and not fall in. ✨Push through the working leg on the box to come back up to standing. ✨For more of a challenge, you can reach forward with the non-working leg vs. keeping it at your side. ✨Do 3 sets of 10 repetitions or until you fatigue. • To make it harder: increase the height of the step or add weights. To make it easier: decrease the height of the step. • Don’t underestimate this simple exercise! Try it out & tag me if you do 💪🏼

Fit Friday: Challenge your balance and glutes like this! Standing Glute Kickbacks work on your glute strength w/ the kickback on one leg and challenges your single leg balance on the other. ⠀

To avoid doing this incorrectly, bend forward at the hips a little bit and have your hands at your chest. Shift your weight to one leg, make sure you are stable on that leg and that your core is tight, then kick the other leg back and bring it back to center in a slow and controlled manner. The kick back should be not be too excessive, cause your hips to rotate or cause your back to arch. Repeat the same steps on the other leg. Exercise can also be done without the band.⠀

❗️❗️You should be feeling this in your glutes and not so much on your lower back. If you start feeling it on your back, you are probably kicking back too far or the resistance used is too much. If balance is an issue, you should start by holding onto a stable surface.❗️❗️❗️⠀

I don't like conditioning sessions, probably because I'm not good at them! Cardio has always been my worst physical attribute. I've gained strength well in lots of things, my flexibility has been good to me, and my movement control and variability has also done well by me in all the activities I like to do.

But I have to work really hard to get to middling performance in cardio, so even though this workout is probably easy for a lot of people, I'm pretty happy with this. I did 10 sets of this on the rower. 10 seconds hard as possible, 20 seconds at 85 percent and then 30 seconds easy. Rested a few minutes and did it again.

This took me about 10 weeks to build up to, and maybe I could have done this right away but I know I'd have been wiped out for a long time afterwards. This was very difficult in the moment, but then I recovered and did some work and chores, and had a great podcast recording with my teacher @jkd_unlimited

Don't give up on your weaknesses, it will take a lot longer than you'd like but you'll be better than before that's for sure.

Well it’s anniversary season...next week will mark my 6th year anniversary working for @tb12sports. I took a leap from the traditional outpatient ortho clinic to a cutting edge, soft tissue based sports therapy center. Well it’s anniversary season...next week will mark my 6th year anniversary working for @tb12sports. I took a leap from the traditional outpatient ortho clinic to a cutting edge, soft tissue based sports therapy center. If you ever need inspiration to continue excelling in the nursing world and beyond, check out Black Women Leaders In Nursing: B.W.L.N. (@blackwomenleadersinnursing). This nonprofit organization was established to empower black women in nursing leadership and new nurse leaders. I would say that at this time, empowerment is needed to start the healing process for a 400-year wound that continually keeps getting dehisced/ripped open for African Americans regardless of their profession. ⠀

*Patellofemoral Pain* [PART 1/3]

Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is pain along the anterior knee or retropatellar region (pain located behind the knee cap). This pain can be limiting in activities, such as walking, running, and working out. Learning the anatomy of the knee can help develop a comprehensive treatment plan. For instance, the quadricep tendon is attached superior to the patella and connects the quadricep muscles to the patella. According to Andy Parsons’s article 5 Tips for Managing Patellofemoral Pain published on Medbridge, PFP treatment should incorporate progressive loading and strengthening of the quadricep muscle.

Between school, work, and extracurricular activities, it is very easy to get overwhelmed and stressed out. I know for me it makes me feel out of control so being able to take certain actions to take care of myself is vital. Here are a few ways I have been caring for myself so I am in the best state to power through on my route to being a PA.

💪🏽 Exercise is so important. I know that sometimes it is easy to say you don’t have enough time for it. I have used that excuse a lot myself. However, taking even just 30 mins to workout can make all the difference. .
👩🏾 Getting a massage or facial is something I have also started doing. I try to get either a facial or massage once a month. I enjoy being able to turn off my phone to get pampered. .
🏖 Being at the beach or pool with a glass of wine is the ideal way for me to relax. .

Dr Dobson performed a detailed physical exam and found some minor dysfunction movement patterns as the cause of injury. It made perfect sense and he was given a treatment plan with home exercises to help.”
