Pranayama, especially Viloma pranayama has really helped me a lot. Every morning when I wake up I go outside on my patio, I light candles, sit down on my yoga mat and meditate for awhile. Either before meditation or after meditation I do pranayama. My favorite is Viloma. Why do I love this one so much? Well, because it calms down the body so much. It’s helping with anxiety, it slows down the heart rate and it clears my mind for the day. The start of my day get instantly better. . . How do you do this? Close your eyes. Take a few normal breaths in and out through your nose and ground yourself. 1. Take your index finger and middle finger and place them on your forehead. 3. Then take the ring finger and place close your left nostril. 5. Take a deep breath from your right nostril. 7. Then take the thumb and close the right nostril. Exhale from the left nostril. 8. Inhale from the left nostril. 9. Close the left nostril 10. Exhale from the right nostril. . . Keep doing this for at least 10 breaths and you will feel a sense of calm rushing over you. ♥️ Good job! Fundamentals Friday: Pranayama Pranayama is a fundamental tool used in yoga to harness the power of the breath. Most yoga and meditation classes start by “tuning into the breath”, and all classes utilize the breath throughout the practice to connect the mind and body, linking breath to movement. Through the practice of pranayama, we begin to observe and direct our awareness towards the breath, finding our way back to the present moment. You don’t have to limit your pranayama practice to yoga class. You can practice wherever you are, right now, with this simple technique: 1. Begin by closing your eyes and observing the breath’s natural rhythm, without judgment. Is your breath short and quick, or long and slow? 2. Begin to make subtle adjustments to the breath, matching the length of your inhales to the length of your exhales. Slowly begin to elongate and deepen the breath, eventually allowing the breath to flow in through the nose, expand the lungs, and fill the belly. 3. Now, maintaining the same length and smoothness of the breath, begin to internally focus each inhale to the soft spot between the collarbones. As you exhale, slightly constrict the throat creating a “wave-like” sound. This is your Ujjayi breath- one of the most common pranayama techniques incorporated into yoga classes! 4. This studio I am teaching at for a couple of months? I really love it! It is small and cosy and light and people are so kind! Everything is working together: body, mind and spirit. Every morning I practice yoga. What I have experienced the day before has a great impact of not only how I feel the next day but also how open or tight my body and mind feels. The day after a lot of stress, lot's of challenges and problems, I feel tighter, weaker and less flexible and open. So everything matters and every day matters. When you are living your day positive, God centered and fill yourself with positivity it helps you to not only feel better but also to be more spiritually open that day and the following day. Everything matters! So watch what you feed your body but also your mind with. Watch what you watch, speak, think and how you act.... Watch how you react to people, stress and challenge and realize that you can have a great influence in how you react, shape your experience, thoughts, attitudes...sometimes we feel like we want to punish somebody else by becoming upset, angry, mad, in order to teach somebody else a lesson. The only person though we can truly influence is ourselves and that anger, unforgiveness and frustration is not helping us. Everything matters- especially the small things!
