SENSATIONAL BY YUNG GRAVY ALBUM REVIEW
On his 2019 project Sensational, Yung Gravy delivers a myriad of smooth and plucky songs utilizing a very animated and goofy 80s television host persona, which can at times ring to be a bit one-dimensional or lacking in creativity.
This persona in itself is going to easily give Gravy an audience. While the concept of placing this happy-go-lucky, groovy character into the rap scene isn’t the most jarringly original thing, there isn’t anyone quite doing what Gravy is doing. With his projected, exaggeratedly proper vocal presentation, Gravy carved a niche for himself in the world of comedy rap. While his one-liners come across as a bit stale if not moderately amusing, this strange, overbearingly white persona in itself is enough to draw some sort of shock and entertainment value.
For the most part, Sensational can be described as hit or miss. The higher-quality bangers can be defined by great chemistry between features and hard-hitting, off-putting production. The songs that feel more lackluster on the project rely on the impact of surface-level one-liners repeated throughout the chorus, with little in the way of unique production standards or memorable verses.
